‘Papa fume une pipe’, were the first French words I learned at primairy school. I was 10 years old. Our master spoke slowly and every word trembled in the air as a little island in empty space. We had to repeat this exceptional sound several times: ‘Papa fume une pipe’. Unisono we tasted this miracle. Call it happeness. Call it the charm of the exotic. The excitement I never have forgotten. And when I first heard the words from the Belle Epoque I felt the same excitement. Magical 'musical smoke curls' that rose from the intoxicating French Pipe. Composed a centery ago - except Fumée which premiered in 1920 - these words are as powerfull as if they were composed today.
